This week at Cattlemen’s Livestock Market in Lakeland, we sold right at 500 head. Overall, the market softened just a touch, with cows and calves trending steady to about $10 lower in most classes.

Calves saw the most pressure this week, with most groups coming in around $0.10 off, though a few spots dipped a little more depending on weight and quality. That said, some cattle still sold higher, proving once again that quality matters.

We had a solid offering of cattle this week, and the overall quality held strong. Looking ahead, outside markets are still holding, especially for August and September pickups, which is a good sign that things should stay relatively steady for now.

We’ve got some rain in the forecast, which should help green things up, even if it’s not enough to really get grass growing yet. With that in mind, now’s the time to stay on top of your cows and nutrition. Protein matters, and it shows in the sale ring. A healthy calf is still bringing the most money.

Bottom line: take care of your cows, watch your grass, and push those calves as far as you can without setting your cows back.

As always, thank you to our producers, buyers, and everyone in between who trusts our family with their cattle marketing.
